Maggie Valley
is a tiny town of approximately 350 people located in Haywood County west of Asheville near the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Don’t let its’ small size fool you – this pretty resort town draws thousands of visitors each year with its many attractions, including the Cataloochee Ski Area, North Carolina’s oldest ski resort. Maggie Valley is said to be where “spring spends the summer and lingers into fall.” It has a wonderful, mild climate and national parks and forestland occupy about forty percent of the county. Spring comes early to Maggie Valley and with it, an amazing number of wildflowers, Dogwood and Redbud trees that put on a fantastic display. They are rivaled only by fall when the hardwood forests turn brilliant shades of gold, red, purple and orange and attract more visitors than any other time of the year. (Be sure to bring your camera) Maggie Valley is home to a popular western-based “theme park in the sky,” where visitors arrive by chair lift or incline railway. Once there, an old west atmosphere prevails, complete with rides, nostalgic shops, displays, music, dancing and lots of great food. Recreational activities in or near Maggie Valley include hiking, horseback riding, rafting, fishing, skiing and golf. With its easy access to Asheville, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, more and more visitors are discovering the perfect vacation destination in quaint Maggie Valley.

The Mountains of North Carolina range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Snow may fall in March, but by May, things warm up with daytime highs in the 80s. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common in the summertime. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur in the mountains. It's not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations.
