Sylva
is the county seat of Jackson County, which is located within the Nantahala National Forest near the Tuckasegee River and the Blue Ridge Parkway. This gorgeous area of western North Carolina is conveniently located near the resort towns of Highlands and Cashiers, the Cherokee Indian Reservation and Casino and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There is much activity in the area, including exciting wintertime skiing, hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, gem mining, camping and fishing. Sylva sits at the 2,039-foot level in the northwestern section of the county. The town has more than 2,000 permanent residents and most of the county’s businesses and industries are located here. Be sure and visit the town’s courthouse, which is reached by climbing 107 steps. It was built in 1914, and from its hilltop vantagepoint, you can look out over the river and the bustling little town. Approximately one mile from Sylva is the tiny town of Dillsboro, with a population of only around 150, but its 50 or more shops hold the works of hundreds of mountain artists and craftspeople. Thousands of people visit Dillsboro yearly to ride the popular Great Smoky Mountain Excursion Train and to shop in this creative and pretty little town. If you plan a visit to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Sylva provides a quiet alternative to the more crowded resort towns across the Tennessee State line.

The Mountains of North Carolina range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Snow may fall in March, but by May, things warm up with daytime highs in the 80s. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common in the summertime. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur in the mountains. It%u2019s not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations.
