Cullowhee is a small town tucked into a picturesque valley in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. It is home to Western Carolina University, and lies southwest of Asheville along the banks of the Tuskasegee River. Visitors are drawn to this town within the Nantahala National Forest to enjoy its four seasons of outstanding beauty and a vast array of outdoor recreational activities. The list is endless, including swimming, fishing, boating, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, backpacking, horseback riding and camping. A short thirty-minute ride takes you to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the famous 250-room Biltmore Estate in Asheville is fifty minutes away. Each season in Cullowhee is special, with the wildflowers of spring, the warm colors of fall and crisp winter days on the slopes. The Mountain Heritage Center in Cullowhee celebrates the cultural heritage of the Southern Appalachian region through exhibitions, educational programs and demonstrations. Also be sure to visit Judaculla Rock while in Cullowhee. This is a soapstone boulder covered with Native American petroglyphs, which according to Cherokee mythology, were made by a giant named Tsul’kula when he leaped from atop his mountain home to Caney Fork Creek below.
