Lake Junaluska
is a lovely lake and community of about 2,600, located just two miles from Maggie Valley near Waynesville. Attractions include the Lake Junaluska Assembly Golf Course, where several holes provide incredible views of the 200-acre lake and the surrounding mountains. Tennis courts and a pool are also located at Lake Junaluska, plus there is a very nice walking trail that encircles the entire lake. There are tons of other attractions and activities in the nearby region. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Pisgah National Forest and the Harmon Den Wildlife Refuge make up about 40 percent of the surrounding area. Outdoor recreation includes whitewater rafting, fishing and boating, horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking and snow skiing at Maggie Valley. The town of Waynesville is home to the Cataloochee Ski Resort and has a charming old-fashioned downtown with arts & crafts and antiques shops. The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad and the Cherokee Indian Reservation and Casino are just a short drive from Lake Junaluska and the magnificent Biltmore House in Asheville is just minutes away.

The weather in Asheville and the surrounding areas is hard to predict. The city of Asheville sits in a valley at about 2,200 feet and is surrounded by mountains of more than 6,000 feet in elevation. Temperatures usually run 10 to 25 degrees cooler in the higher elevations than in the city. Spring has mild days and cool nights with some rainy days. Summer is warm and humid with scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures rarely rise above 90 degrees in this region (or above 80 at elevations of 5,000 feet or higher.) Conditions cool down a little by October, and that is also the best month to view the spectacular fall foliage. In winter, the high mountains protect the city and outlying areas, so there is seldom a major snowfall. Highs run in the 40s and 50s.
