Wilmington
is a city steeped in history and natural beauty. It's located along the banks of the Cape Fear River, near the Intercoastal Waterway on North Carolina's southeastern coast. The Gulf Stream helps moderate North Carolina temperatures, especially along the immediate coast. Coastal fronts are common during the winter months and can bring warmer than expected temperatures to the inland coastal areas. However, at times a cold front passes between the Gulf Stream and the North Carolina coast, and the meeting of the two opposing currents sometimes causes rough weather. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are lower than those even a few miles inland. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence the weather about twice in an average year. About once every 10 years, these storms strike a part of the State with sufficient force to do damage. Summer precipitation is the most variable, occurring mostly with thunderstorms. Daily showers are not uncommon, but neither are periods of one to two weeks without rain. Autumn is the driest season.
