Wrightsville-Beach
is just twelve miles east of Wilmington along the Intracoastal Waterway on what is known as the "Cape Fear Coast." Known for its picturesque, white sand beaches and relaxed family atmosphere, Wrightsville Beach has a wide range of accommodations, quaint shops and great restaurants. There are several full-service marinas in Wrightsville Beach offering fishing, boating, diving and water skiing opportunities. The wide, uncrowded beaches are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, shelling or strolling. A little further down the Cape Fear Coast are the family-oriented communities of Kure Beach and Carolina Beach. Nature lovers will enjoy hiking and wildlife viewing in Carolina Beach State Park's 2000 acres along the Intercoastal Waterway. If you visit Wrightsville Beach in August, the Museum of History sponsors an annual "Lumina Daze," which is a celebration of the 1930s era of Wrightsville Beach. Activities range from old-time games, barbershop singing, big bands, ballroom dancing and face painting for the kids. In November, the North Carolina Holiday Flotilla at Wrightsville Beach captures the nautical essence of the holiday spirit of coastal North Carolina. Thousands of visitors come year after year for this daylong party that features gifts made by local artisans, all kinds of food, live music, and an evening boat parade and fireworks.

The Gulf Stream helps moderate North Carolina temperatures, especially along the immediate coast. Coastal fronts are common during the winter months and can bring warmer than expected temperatures to the inland coastal areas. However, at times a cold front passes between the Gulf Stream and the North Carolina coast, and the meeting of the two opposing currents sometimes causes rough weather. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are lower than those even a few miles inland. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence the weather about twice in an average year. About once every 10 years, these storms strike a part of the State with sufficient force to do damage. Summer precipitation is the most variable, occurring mostly with thunderstorms. Daily showers are not uncommon, but neither are periods of one to two weeks without rain. Autumn is the driest season.
