Kure-Beach
is a small, family-friendly community at the southern tip of Pleasure Island, along US Highway 421 near Carolina Beach and the Intracoastal Waterway. From the town of Kure Beach, you can see both the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. The white sand beaches here are generally uncrowded, restaurants are informal and the Kure Beach fishing pier is a magnet for anglers. Other activities near Kure Beach include scuba diving and snorkeling, parasailing, windsurfing, golf, tennis, hiking and picnicking. It's conveniently located right between the historic towns of Wilmington and Southport, where you can visit the U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship and stroll the waterfront shops and restaurants. At Kure Beach, you can wander through the remains of Fort Fisher, one of the Confederacy's largest and most technically advanced forts. Fort Fisher was the last stronghold of the Confederate Army. The North Carolina Aquarium is also located on 24 acres within the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. It has aquariums ranging from 100 gallons to 17,000 gallons, a touch tank, interactive exhibits and a gift shop. Just across the highway at the fort is The Cove, an oak-lined area overlooking the ocean. Swimming is prohibited here due to strong currents, but it's a beautiful place for a relaxing walk or to sit and watch the ever-changing ocean scenery.

Both air and water temperatures are generally mild on the barrier islands. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are considerably lower than those even just a few miles inland. In the winter months, coastal fronts are common and can push inland, bringing warmer than normal temperatures. However, at times, the cold Labrador Current passes between the Gulf Stream and the North Carolina coast, offsetting most of the general warming effect the Gulf Stream might otherwise have on coastal temperatures. Opposite the ocean, across the narrow barrier islands behind most beaches, are the "Sounds". These protected inland waters, calm, quiet and sheltered even from the sea breezes, are bordered on both sides by cool forests and productive swamps with unique vegetation and wildlife.
