Figure-Eight-Island
is unique. It's a tranquil, private oceanfront island community, located just minutes from Wilmington and just north of Wrightsville Beach. To reach Figure Eight Island, you cross a private bridge onto the 1,300-acre, highly restricted island of just 441 homes (and no condos.) You won't find huge hotels or shopping centers here, and little traffic or tourists. What you will find are miles of white sandy beach and sparkling blue waters - a completely "non-commercialized" island retreat that has become a hideaway for celebrities and politicians, such as former Vice President Al Gore. The community includes a yacht club, marina, tennis courts and boat ramp, and a guard will let you on the island only if someone on the island, such as a friend or real estate agent, has okayed it. The island offers ideal conditions for swimming, shelling, birdwatching, quiets walks along the beach, kayaking, windsurfing, biking, tennis and golf. If you get a yearning for more excitement and nightlife, just cross the bridge to Wilmington or visit nearby Wrightsville Beach.

The Gulf Stream helps moderate North Carolina temperatures, especially along the immediate coast. Coastal fronts are common during the winter months and can bring warmer than expected temperatures to the inland coastal areas. However, at times a cold front passes between the Gulf Stream and the North Carolina coast, and the meeting of the two opposing currents sometimes causes rough weather. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are lower than those even a few miles inland. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence the weather about twice in an average year. About once every 10 years, these storms strike a part of the State with sufficient force to do damage. Summer precipitation is the most variable, occurring mostly with thunderstorms. Daily showers are not uncommon, but neither are periods of one to two weeks without rain. Autumn is the driest season.
