Oak-Island
are located in Brunswick County, south of Wilmington at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Oak Island is 12.6 miles long and consists of the towns of Oak Island and Caswell Beach. The fishing village of Southport has long served as a harbor for sea-going craft and is a tranquil city known for its hospitality. Oak Island's family-oriented seaside communities offer a ten-mile stretch of sandy beach and quiet surf, wetlands and maritime forests. All sorts of activities are available including boating and sailing, fishing, swimming, water-skiing, clamming and shelling, hiking and biking. There are 15 challenging golf courses within seven miles of Oak Island/Southport, as well as miniature golf, amusement parks, three piers and a marina with a public boat launch. Other nearby attractions include the Maritime Museum, the Fort Fisher State Park and Historic Site and the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Southport's picturesque streets are lined with historic homes and huge sprawling oak trees, some of the oldest in the South. The historic business district, the Southport Riverwalk and the Yacht Basin have lots of colorful and unique gift shops, art galleries, antique shops and wonderful seafood restaurants. The Visitor's Center in downtown Southport has maps and brochures and offers self-guided tours and a list of festivals in the Oak Island/Southport region.

Both air and water temperatures are generally mild on the barrier islands. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are considerably lower than those even just a few miles inland. In the winter months, coastal fronts are common and can push inland, bringing warmer than normal temperatures. However, at times, the cold Labrador Current passes between the Gulf Stream and the North Carolina coast, offsetting most of the general warming effect the Gulf Stream might otherwise have on coastal temperatures. Opposite the ocean, across the narrow barrier islands behind most beaches, are the "Sounds". These protected inland waters, calm, quiet and sheltered even from the sea breezes, are bordered on both sides by cool forests and productive swamps with unique vegetation and wildlife.
