Holden-Beach
is an island located in the coastal region southwest of Wilmington, in what is known as the "Brunswick Islands" area of North Carolina. After prospering in the 1920s as a commercial fishing center, Holden Beach evolved into a popular family vacation spot known for its superb offshore fishing and full-service fishing pier for both casual and professional anglers. A two-lane, elevated bridge takes visitors from the mainland to the island, where they are greeted by eleven miles of white-sand beach in a serene, subtropical climate. It's the quintessential family seaside vacation destination. You can relax on the beach, enjoy swimming, shelling, windsurfing, sailing, biking, hiking or kayaking. Ocean Blvd. has sidewalks that are perfect for walking, jogging, inline skating or bike riding. Brunswick County has a total of 37 golf courses near Holden Beach, and bumper boats, go-karts, a waterslide and putt-putt golf are just minutes away across the causeway. Holden Beach has antique shops, boutiques and galleries to browse, and fresh seafood restaurants abound. The southern coast of North Carolina has a rich historical background, as well, and history buffs will enjoy exploring the nearby charming port towns, lighthouses, forts and museums near Holden Beach.

Coastal North Carolina has a temperate climate with no extreme temperature variations. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are usually considerably lower than those even a few miles inland. Opposite the ocean, across the narrow barrier islands behind most beaches, are the "Sounds". These protected inland waters are calm, quiet and sheltered from the sea breezes. In winter, the Gulf Stream helps moderate air temperature and coastal fronts are common, bringing warmer than expected temperatures to the coastal areas. Sometimes, strong low-pressure systems clash with the Gulf Stream and develop into major storms, causing rain along the coast and over states to the north as well. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to North Carolina to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
