Located in Brunswick County southwest of Wilmington, Ocean Isle Beach is one of the southernmost of the North Carolina barrier islands. This lovely community has miles and miles of white sandy beaches, sun-kissed waves and windswept marshlands. The permanent population of this island is approximately 450, but swells to 22,000 in season. In spite of its popularity, Ocean Isle Beach maintains a low-key, relaxed and leisurely charm. As part of Brunswick County, Ocean Isle Beach has access to an abundance of recreational opportunities that includes swimming, boating, fishing, surfing, clamming, shelling, hiking and more. Family activities include a waterslide, go-karts, an arcade and miniature golf. Ocean Isle Beach is also home to a renowned waterfront restaurant, great for watching the sunset as you dine on mouthwatering fresh seafood. Other beachside communities near Ocean Isle Beach include Southport, Oak Island, St. James Plantation and Holden Beach.

Coastal North Carolina has a temperate climate with no extreme temperature variations. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are usually considerably lower than those even a few miles inland. Opposite the ocean, across the narrow barrier islands behind most beaches, are the "Sounds". These protected inland waters are calm, quiet and sheltered from the sea breezes. In winter, the Gulf Stream helps moderate air temperature and coastal fronts are common, bringing warmer than expected temperatures to the coastal areas. Sometimes, strong low-pressure systems clash with the Gulf Stream and develop into major storms, causing rain along the coast and over states to the north as well. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to North Carolina to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
