Bald-Head-Island
is a unique barrier island situated on North Carolina's Atlantic seacoast - a land of pristine beauty, sand dunes, marsh, tidal creek, forest and 14 miles of spectacular beaches. From the village of Southport, visitors take a ferry to reach Bald Head Island. Once there, transportation is by bicycle, golf cart, walking or rollerblading. This is a place where the passage of time seems unimportant - no phone calls to take, no meetings to attend. Instead, you can choose to go for days and not do anything except sit on a beach with a good book or daydream while you listen to the waves. However, if a little more action is what you're looking for, try walking on the beach, kayaking in the marshes, biking through the forest, swimming, skating, fishing, picnicking, tennis or golf. Other seaside pastimes such as crabbing, clamming, windsurfing and sailing are also available on Bald Head Island. You will also find a 10-acre harbor and full-service marina with boat and fishing equipment rentals, fishing charters, canoe and kayak excursions. Narrated tours of the island are also available. This round-trip ferry passage includes lunch and an entrance to the Smith Island Museum of History and the Old Baldy Lighthouse. Restaurants on Bald Head Island are excellent and as you would expect, specialize in steam pots full of crab legs, shrimp, mussels, clams, potatoes and corn. Both air and water temperatures are generally mild on the barrier islands. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are considerably lower than those even just a few miles inland. In the winter months, coastal fronts are common and can push inland, bringing warmer than normal temperatures. However, at times, the cold Labrador Current passes between the Gulf Stream and the North Carolina coast, offsetting most of the general warming effect the Gulf Stream might otherwise have on coastal temperatures. Opposite the ocean, across the narrow barrier islands behind most beaches, are the "Sounds". These protected inland waters, calm, quiet and sheltered even from the sea breezes, are bordered on both sides by cool forests and productive swamps with unique vegetation and wildlife.
