Sunset-Beach
is the smallest of the three southernmost Brunswick Islands. It is located southwest of Wilmington near Tubbs Inlet and Ocean Isle Beach. As you approach the island from the mainland, a quaint wooden bridge leads you across a salt marsh to the three-mile long pristine beach that is known for its sea oats which attracts hundreds of shore birds. Beach activities abound on the island, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, boating, surfing, swimming and beachcombing. There are over 45 beautiful and challenging golf courses in the Sunset Beach area, and hundreds more just a short drive away. Many consider this part of the North Carolina coast as the "Golf Capital of the World." Sunset Beach is located in Brunswick County, which is comprised of six communities; Southport, St. James Plantation, Oak Island, Ocean Isle, Holden Beach and Bald Head Island. Each area is unique and offers a variety of specialty shops, casual dining and fine restaurants, historic tours, romantic dinner cruises, miniature golf, musical venues, amusement parks and more. Sunset Beach has a small commercial center that provides basic supplies and amenities for visitors, and it is also the only land access for the southernmost undeveloped barrier island, Bird Island. Cottages, hotels, condos and other accommodations are also available for rent on Sunset Island.

Coastal North Carolina has a temperate climate with no extreme temperature variations. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are usually considerably lower than those even a few miles inland. Opposite the ocean, across the narrow barrier islands behind most beaches, are the "Sounds". These protected inland waters are calm, quiet and sheltered from the sea breezes. In winter, the Gulf Stream helps moderate air temperature and coastal fronts are common, bringing warmer than expected temperatures to the coastal areas. Sometimes, strong low-pressure systems clash with the Gulf Stream and develop into major storms, causing rain along the coast and over states to the north as well. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to North Carolina to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
