Hot Springs is a small, quaint town located just 40 minutes northwest of Asheville, within the Pisgah National Forest along the French Broad River. It was named for the hot mineral springs located in the town, and has long been known as a relaxing and romantic getaway. The hot springs were first discovered in 1792, and by the late 1800s, people from all over the country were traveling to Hot Springs to enjoy the curative waters, fresh mountain air and gorgeous scenery. Along with the mineral springs, some of the best massage therapists in the country can be found in Hot Springs – sure to make this one of the most blissful vacation destinations you’ll discover. Outdoor enthusiasts will also enjoy Hot Springs. There is hiking on the Appalachian Trail, rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing and boating in the area. Hot Springs is also known for its’ arts and crafts and is home to a crafters’ cooperative that features works of some of the local artisans. When it comes to dining, you’ll find everything from old-fashioned country cooking to gourmet food in Hot Springs, and accommodations range from rustic camping to beautiful bed and breakfast inns. Hot Springs hosts an Annual Trailfest, which is a celebration of the Appalachian Trail, with lots of good food, mountain music and outdoor adventure. There is also an annual Bluff Mountain Festival in Hot Springs that is a fundraiser for the Madison County Arts Council. This event has free admission and features some of the region’s best traditional and bluegrass music, as well as a popular “silent auction” of works of some of the local artists and craftspeople in the area.

Hot Springs Weather & Climate

The weather in Asheville and the surrounding areas is hard to predict. The city of Asheville sits in a valley at about 2,200 feet and is surrounded by mountains of more than 6,000 feet in elevation. Temperatures usually run 10 to 25 degrees cooler in the higher elevations than in the city. Spring has mild days and cool nights with some rainy days. Summer is warm and humid with scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures rarely rise above 90 degrees in this region (or above 80 at elevations of 5,000 feet or higher.) Conditions cool down a little by October, and that is also the best month to view the spectacular fall foliage. In winter, the high mountains protect the city and outlying areas, so there is seldom a major snowfall. Highs run in the 40s and 50s.
