Asheville sits on the banks of the French Broad River, nestled between the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. It’s a beautiful city with a rich mountain heritage, and attractions include America’s largest home; the 250-room Biltmore House, plus Historic Downtown Asheville, and the home of famous poet/biographer, Carl Sandburg. For movie and history buffs, Asheville is near the “real” Cold Mountain. Since it’s government owned, the mountain is still in its’ natural state and offers a strenuous ten-mile hike to reach its’ summit at 6,030 feet. Or, you can enjoy the view from your car via the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 412, which is about 30 miles from downtown Asheville. If you enjoy outdoor sports, Asheville offers four seasons of fun activities. Wintertime brings downhill skiing, snowboarding and sledding. Spring and summer’s warmer days are perfect for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, white water rafting and fishing. Autumn turns the mountains multi-shades of gold, red, and yellow (don’t forget your camera to capture some incredible mountain scenery.) Downtown Asheville has excellent restaurants – and not just delicious North Carolina brook trout and barbecue – but everything from Mediterranean to Japanese. The city also holds tightly to their arts and crafts traditions, and many local artisans open their studios to visitors who can watch them demonstrate their craft. The Folk Art Center, a haven for those who love mountain crafts, is located ten minutes from downtown Asheville. All of this, plus several annual special events and festivals make Asheville a family favorite vacation destination.

Asheville Weather & Climate

The weather in Asheville and the surrounding areas is hard to predict. The city of Asheville sits in a valley at about 2,200 feet and is surrounded by mountains of more than 6,000 feet in elevation. Temperatures usually run 10 to 25 degrees cooler in the higher elevations than in the city. Spring has mild days and cool nights with some rainy days. Summer is warm and humid with scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures rarely rise above 90 degrees in this region (or above 80 at elevations of 5,000 feet or higher.) Conditions cool down a little by October, and that is also the best month to view the spectacular fall foliage. In winter, the high mountains protect the city and outlying areas, so there is seldom a major snowfall. Highs run in the 40s and 50s.
