Montreat is a small community located north of neighboring Black Mountain in the mountains of western North Carolina. It lies just east of the city of Asheville and was originally founded as a spiritual retreat and incorporated as a town in 1967. Nestled at the foot of Graybeard Mountain near the Tennessee Valley Divide and surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Montreat is a unique town filled with incredible natural beauty. There is no commercial development here – no traffic lights – just narrow, winding streets, flowing streams and native flora and fauna. Located in a mountain cove, paths meander through the area, over wooden bridges and along picturesque creeks and on throughout hundreds of acres of woodlands and wilderness areas. Montreat is also home to a conference center that includes guest lodges, a stone auditorium, and a craft center and childcare center. It goes without saying that life moves at a slower pace than usual in Montreat. The community of Black Mountain abuts Montreat to the south and offers upscale gift shops, fine restaurants, art galleries and an old-fashioned general store. Black Mountain is also home to an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, and a city park with lighted walking paths surrounding a lake. Nearby attractions include The Blue Ridge Parkway, the Biltmore Estate, Chimney Rock Park and Grandfather Mountain.

Montreat Weather & Climate

The weather in Asheville and the surrounding areas is hard to predict. The city of Asheville sits in a valley at about 2,200 feet and is surrounded by mountains of more than 6,000 feet in elevation. Temperatures usually run 10 to 25 degrees cooler in the higher elevations than in the city. Spring has mild days and cool nights with some rainy days. Summer is warm and humid with scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures rarely rise above 90 degrees in this region (or above 80 at elevations of 5,000 feet or higher.) Conditions cool down a little by October, and that is also the best month to view the spectacular fall foliage. In winter, the high mountains protect the city and outlying areas, so there is seldom a major snowfall. Highs run in the 40s and 50s.
