Celo
is a small community of approximately 34 families located in the western mountains of Yancey County, North Carolina. A number of artisans live and work in Celo, and as a result, the largest single economic activity in the community is the work of potters, glass blowers, etc. A cooperative shop on Route 80 near the town displays the works of Celo artists, as well items made by other craftspeople from outside the community. There are more artists per capita in the western mountains of North Carolina then in any other region in the country. As part of Yancey County, Celo offers visitors an abundance of outdoor activities to enjoy. Choose from hiking, fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, white water rafting, skiing or golf. Nestled among the diverse forests and western mountains of the state also means lots of sightseeing opportunities. Yancey County has the highest average elevation of any county in North Carolina and the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway makes up its' southeastern border. The nearby town of Burnsville has a picturesque town square that is lined with unique shops, galleries and restaurants, and is the site of craft fairs and summer evening concerts. In addition, the annual Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair is held the first weekend in August in Burnsville and features handmade quilts, pottery, baskets and other handmade items.

North Carolina has the greatest range of altitude of any state east of the Mississippi River, ranging from sea level along the Atlantic coast to 6,684 feet at the summit of Mt. Mitchell in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Latitude accounts for climatic variations, as does soils, plant cover and inland bodies of water. There is no distinct wet or dry season in North Carolina. Average snowfall in the southern mountains is around 16 inches, with some of the higher mountain peaks and upper slopes receiving as much as 50 inches per year. July is usually the wettest month. Summer rainfall is the most variable; daily showers are not uncommon, but periods of one to two weeks without rain are also normal. Autumn is the driest season, and also sees the greatest drop-off of temperature in the month of October.
