Bakersville is a tiny town located in Mitchell County within the Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina. With a population of just 500, Bakersville is one of only two incorporated towns located in the county. Mitchell County is home to Roan Mountain and just minutes from Roan Mountain State Park in Tennessee. This area of the state is well known for its’ beautiful scenery. Roan Mountain has the largest, natural gardens of rhododendron in the world, and Bakersville is the site of the annual North Carolina Rhododendron Festival each year. The highest peak east of the Mississippi River, Mount Mitchell, is located in neighboring Yancey County, and Grandfather Mountain, one of the oldest mountains in the world, is in adjoining Avery County. The North Toe River flows through Mitchell County near Bakersville, and joins the South Toe River at Toecane to form the Nolichucky River. Hiking trails abound in the area, including the Roan Mountain Garden Trail, which includes two loop trails, one that is handicapped accessible. The second loop runs through a natural garden of purple rhododendron with several overlooks, where on a clear day one can see views of Mt. Mitchell, Grandfather Mountain, Table Rock and Hump Mountain. Mitchell County is also known for its’ rich trove of gems and minerals, and the well-known annual North Carolina Mineral and Gem Festival is held in the town of Spruce Pine each August. Nearby Roan Mountain State Park encompasses over 2,000 acres and offers swimming, fishing, camping, hiking and year round educational programs from park rangers and naturalists.
