Plumtree is located in a peaceful valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina on the banks of the North Toe River. It lies in the heart of one of the most visited areas of the state, near dozens of attractions and unlimited recreational possibilities. The Blue Ridge Parkway is just east of Plumtree, and the Appalachian Trail is just seven miles away. Outdoor activities include hiking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking and river rafting, downhill skiing and snowboarding, horseback riding, gem mining, rock climbing and golf. The extraordinary beauty of Linville Falls and Linville Caverns is just twenty minutes away, and Grandfather Mountain, with its’ Mile High Swinging Bridge, is just a half hour drive from Plumtree. Many interesting and ancient rock formations can be found in the area, including Sitting Bear, Hawksbill, Table Rock and the Chimneys. Children will love visiting the Tweetsie Railroad and Mystery Hill, and other attractions include numerous waterfalls, the Sugar Mountain ski area and Mt. Mitchell State Park. Arts and crafts shops, antique stores and country-style restaurants abound in the area and the towns of Blowing Rock, Banner Elk and Beech Mountain are all an easy drive. For those wanting to venture a little further away, be sure to visit the Biltmore Estate and Gardens - about an hour and 15 minutes from Plumtree.

North Carolina has the greatest range of altitude of any state east of the Mississippi River, ranging from sea level along the Atlantic coast to 6,684 feet at the summit of Mt. Mitchell in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Latitude accounts for climatic variations, as does soils, plant cover and inland bodies of water. There is no distinct wet or dry season in North Carolina. Average snowfall in the southern mountains is around 16 inches, with some of the higher mountain peaks and upper slopes receiving as much as 50 inches per year. July is usually the wettest month. Summer rainfall is the most variable; daily showers are not uncommon, but periods of one to two weeks without rain are also normal. Autumn is the driest season, and also sees the greatest drop-off of temperature in the month of October.
