Sugar-Mountain is centrally located in the western mountains of North Carolina, near all the major attractions such as the Blue Ridge Parkway, Roan Mountain, Grandfather Mountain and the quaint tourist towns of Banner Elk and Boone. It's most well known, however, as being the site of one of the largest ski areas in the state, and one of the few resorts that breaks a 1,000-foot vertical run south of New England. There are 20 trails for skiing and snowboarding and 8 lifts that spread out over 115 acres, with everything from gentle terrain for beginners to the summit, which is popular with even seasoned experts. Sugar Mountain offers equipment rentals of all kinds, and a tubing park with a 700-foot long run serviced by 2 lifts, as well as 100 lighted acres that are open seven nights a week for night skiing. Accommodations on the mountain include motel type rooms, condos and chalets, and the base lodge offers a cafeteria, lounge, sportswear shop, locker rooms and a game room. Nearby, the towns of Banner Elk and Boone have a wide variety of restaurants to choose from, everything from country cooking to seafood, and shopping in boutiques, art galleries and unique gift shops. Not just a winter resort, Sugar Mountain also has lots to offer in the summertime. Lift rides take visitors to the summit where they can enjoy a picnic lunch amid breathtaking views. Other activities near Sugar Mountain include mountain biking, hiking, fishing, rafting, horseback riding and golf. Sugar Mountain is also the site of an Annual Oktoberfest in the fall.

Sugar Mountain Weather & Climate

The High Country in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina has four mild seasons that help support the busy tourist trade. The mountain valley temperatures average 6 to 8 degrees cooler than the nearby Piedmont region in the summer months, and near the mountain peaks, it can be 10-20 degrees cooler. Moist southerly winds are forced upward in passing over the mountain barrier, causing showers and thunderstorms in spring and summer. Due to mild summer temperatures, the mountains have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Summer nights are crisp and cool, but not too cold for camping or other outdoor activities. Although it does snow in the region, large amounts of snowfall and severe low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Therefore most ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply.
