Green Mountain is located in the western part of the state, near Roan Mountain, which has the largest, naturally occurring rhododendron gardens in the world. The nearby town of Bakersville, which is just a short drive northeast of Green Mountain, is the site of the North Carolina Rhododendron Festival each June. The North Toe River flows through the area and the Blue Ridge Parkway is just east of Green Mountain. Hiking trails abound in the forests and fishing, canoeing, white water rafting, mountain biking, horseback riding, camping and downhill skiing are just some of the other outdoor activities from which to choose. The village of Burnsville, which is just south of Green Mountain, centers on a town square that offers a variety of unique shops, art galleries and restaurants. The square is also the site of many craft fairs, summer evening concerts and a festive 4th of July Celebration. The area is also known for its’ rich trove of gemstones and minerals, and rockhounds from around the world descend on the region to search for treasures. There are even places near Green Mountain where your “find” can be cut and made into custom jewelry. The North Carolina Mineral and Gem Festival, one of the oldest festivals of its’ kind, is held in the neighboring town of Spruce Pine. There is always something to do or a new discovery to be made in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, and Green Mountain makes a central location from which to explore.

There is no distinct wet or dry season in North Carolina. Average snowfall in the southern mountains is around 16 inches, with some of the higher mountain peaks and upper slopes receiving as much as 50 inches per year. July is usually the wettest month. Summer rainfall is the most variable; daily showers are not uncommon, but periods of one to two weeks without rain are also normal.
