Sparta is the county seat of Alleghany County, located along U.S. Highway 21 at the midway point of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is approximately 77 miles northwest of Winston-Salem. Sparta is part of North Carolina's High Country, where the saying is "Getting here is easy, leaving is not." A pleasant, relaxing town, Sparta has a rich mountain heritage, but also has modern amenities to offer visitors. Tourism and outdoor recreation is key to Sparta and Alleghany County, where you'll find attractions such as the New River State Park, Cumberland Knob, Stone Mountain State Park and Doughton Park, which is the largest and most diverse of the Blue Ridge Parkway's recreational areas. Four distinct seasons bring a wide range of activities and beauty to the mountains surrounding Sparta. The area has over eighty miles of hatchery supported trout streams, and other sports include canoeing, river tubing, hiking, mountain biking, downhill and cross-country skiing, camping and golf. The New River, which is one of the oldest rivers in North America (about 320 million years old, meaning it was already in place when the Appalachian Mountains were formed,) has a wide variety of wildlife, making it perfect for birdwatching and photography, as well as canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Historic attractions in the area include the Brinegar Cabin on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Fred Weaver Home on the New River and the Alleghany County Courthouse in Sparta.

Sparta Weather & Climate

The Northwest Blue Ridge Mountains range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the cities below. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations, with temperatures rarely reaching 90 degrees. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common in season. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur at the mountain peaks. It's not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations.
