Jefferson
and its’ sister city, West Jefferson, are located in Ashe County in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Interstates 77 and 40 are less than an hour away and the cities of Charlotte and Winston-Salem are less than two hours away. Jefferson is the oldest town in the “High Country” of North Carolina, founded in 1800 as the county seat. The historic old courthouse and surrounding buildings are still the center of the county government. This is a classic small town with warm, friendly people and a quiet way of life. It serves as the gateway to Mount Jefferson State Park and New River State Park, where recreation abounds for the nature lover. Engage in swimming, fishing and canoeing, hiking, biking or horseback riding, or enjoy a round of golf amid beautiful mountain scenery. It has been said, “there is no better experience than a hike to the summit of Mount Jefferson, a canoe trip on the New River, or a leisurely drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway.” All are within minutes of Jefferson. Art, music and theater can be found at the Ashe Arts Center and the Ashe Civic Center, and the Ashe County Arts Council brings in talent from all over the country for monthly exhibits from artists, sculptors and photographers. Great restaurants, arts and crafts galleries and specialty shops can be found in Jefferson and West Jefferson, and at various spots along the scenic country mountain roads.

The High Country in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina has four mild seasons that help support the busy tourist trade. The mountain valley temperatures average 6 to 8 degrees cooler than the nearby Piedmont region in the summer months, and near the mountain peaks, it can be 10-20 degrees cooler. Moist southerly winds are forced upward in passing over the mountain barrier, causing showers and thunderstorms in spring and summer. Due to mild summer temperatures, the mountains have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Summer nights are crisp and cool, but not too cold for camping or other outdoor activities. Although it does snow in the region, large amounts of snowfall and severe low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Therefore most ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply.
