West Jefferson
and Jefferson are considered “sister cities,” located in Ashe County near Mt. Jefferson State Park. Jefferson is the larger of the two towns, with a population of approximately 1,400, and West Jefferson has just over a thousand residents. Sightseeing along miles of scenic highway along the Blue Ridge Parkway, browsing for antiques and mountain crafts, is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a day when visiting West Jefferson. Or, stay right in town, which has over a dozen art galleries, antique and specialty shops of its’ own. Outdoor recreation also abounds in the area, and West Jefferson serves as the gateway to the New River State Park and Mt. Jefferson State Park regions. Activities to choose from include rafting and canoeing the New River, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, swimming and skiing. There are two wonderful golf courses located near West Jefferson and a shooting reserve. Ashe County features 4,000 parks, many situated along the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway, and hundreds of hiking trails meander through the countryside. If it happens to rain when you visit, a tour of the Ashe County Cheese Factory is an interesting way to spend an afternoon, or check out the Ashe Arts and Civic Center. West Jefferson is approximately two hours from the Linville Gorge and Caverns and the resort towns of Banner Elk and Boone.

The High Country in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina has four mild seasons that help support the busy tourist trade. The mountain valley temperatures average 6 to 8 degrees cooler than the nearby Piedmont region in the summer months, and near the mountain peaks, it can be 10-20 degrees cooler. Moist southerly winds are forced upward in passing over the mountain barrier, causing showers and thunderstorms in spring and summer. Due to mild summer temperatures, the mountains have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Summer nights are crisp and cool, but not too cold for camping or other outdoor activities. Although it does snow in the region, large amounts of snowfall and severe low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Therefore most ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply.
