Roaring-Gap
is a small town along U.S. Highway 21 just a few miles east of Stone Mountain State Park. Other nearby attractions include the Blue Ridge Parkway, the New River, Doughton Park and Cumberland Knob Park. Stone Mountain State Park is named for the spectacular 600-foot granite dome that lies inside the park. It's not immediately visible on entering the park, but patient visitors are awestruck by the sight of it towering over the peaceful meadow surrounding it. Weather has created a "mini-moonscape" on the dome-shaped granite mass and gentle streams, trails and the sheer rock face are perfect for hikers, rock climbers and anglers. Stone Mountain was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1975. There are also more than 17 miles of designated trout waters in the park and more than 16 miles of hiking trails. Stone Mountain State Park is bounded to the north by the Blue Ridge Parkway and to the west by the Thurmond Chatham Game Lands. The New River, also near Roaring Gap, offers canoeing and rafting, fishing and tubing. Several public golf courses can also be found in the Roaring Gap region. Sightseeing along the country roads in the Blue Ridge Mountains takes you to many other small towns and villages that offer antiquing, unique arts and crafts shops, farmer's markets and restaurants with good, old-fashioned country cooking.

The Northwest Blue Ridge Mountains range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the cities below. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations, with temperatures rarely reaching 90 degrees. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common in season. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur at the mountain peaks. It's not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations.
