Pilot Mountain
is a small town located in Surry County in the northwest portion of the state. This peaceful little community of approximately 1,300 is believed to be the inspiration for the fictional town of “Mt. Pilot” on the popular television series, “The Andy Griffith Show.” It is named for the unusual geological formation of the same name located nearby that has become the towns landmark. The mountain rises to a peak of 2,421 feet above sea level and is one of the most distinctive natural features in the state. It has two distinct pinnacles named Big and Little Pinnacle. Trails on the mountain lead to Little Pinnacle and the Jomeokee Trail leads around the base of Big Pinnacle, but Big Pinnacle itself is closed to climbing. Other interesting geological formations can be seen nearby at Hanging Rock State Park. The town of Pilot Mountain is also home to Pilot Mountain State Park, which extends to the Yadkin River. A portion of the Yadkin River Canoe Trail meanders through the park past two small islands that are 45 and 15 acres in size. You can reach the islands by canoe, horseback or wading on foot (the water here is broad and shallow.) Many other activities and events are available in Pilot Mountain State Park, from camping and fishing, to astronomy lessons and kite workshops.

The foothills region of the Blue Ridge Mountains has a four-season, mild climate. Temperatures are warmer in winter than the High Country, and cooler in summer than the low lying areas. Spring has mild days and cool nights with some rainy days. Summer is warm and humid with scattered afternoon thunderstorms, but temperatures rarely rise above 90 degrees. Conditions cool down by October, but days are still warm and nights are cool, and it%u2019s the driest period. It%u2019s perfect weather for viewing the spectacular fall foliage. In winter, the high mountains protect the area and there is seldom a major snowfall. Highs even in the middle of winter range in the 40s and 50s. Nighttime lows are normally at or below freezing. In the lowlands, snows of about 1%u201D occur about 1-5 times a year. Snow falls more frequently at higher elevations, and most snow falls in January and February.
