Raleigh
, the state Capital of North Carolina, is situated in “The Piedmont” region of the state, which lies between the coastal plains and the mountains. The Piedmont is where you will find the vaunted Research Triangle, a scientific institute founded in 1958 by Duke University, the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University in Raleigh. The city of Raleigh is an educational and historical center, boasting six college campuses, including St. Mary’s College, which was founded in 1842, as well as NCSU. New suburbs and shopping malls dominate the outskirts of town, and beautifully designed new homes blend into the landscape that retains much of its original wooded character. For the best tour of the city, make the Capital Area Visitor Center your first stop, where the staff will help you organize a walking or driving tour. A few of the places to consider visiting are the historic State Capitol, North Carolina Museum of Natural Science, the North Carolina Museum of History and the Museum of Art. Raleigh has 156 parks in addition to its greenway connecting some 46 miles of hiking paths. A number of state recreational parks are an easy jaunt from the Research Triangle, and the Falls Lake State Recreational Area is just to the northwest of Raleigh. Here you’ll find campgrounds, hiking trails, playgrounds, fishing, swimming and boating. All of this, plus fine accommodations and restaurants makes Raleigh a fantastic base from which to explore the whole Piedmont region of North Carolina.

Raleigh Weather & Climate

|
The Piedmont Plateau in central North Carolina has become popular with retirees looking for a moderate climate. The region is protected by the western mountain ranges in winter, so the cold, snowy conditions of the mountainous ski resorts is less common here in the warmer east. Summer weather is the least variable and the most predictable - often with very calm conditions. Wind speeds are also much lower in summer than in winter. Intense, short-lived local showers are often common on a summer afternoon, although occasionally there are more widespread, gentle rain showers. Autumn is the driest season. Average humidity does not vary greatly from season to season, and the lowest levels are found over the southern Piedmont region. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to North Carolina to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
