Oxford
is the county seat of Granville County which is located between Durham and Henderson near the Kerr Lake State Recreation Area. This lovely little community of approximately 8, 500 people has been described as “one of the prettiest towns in all the country, with wide and shaded streets, large lawns and elegant residences.” Several of its business and residential districts are on the National Register of Historic Places and it sits atop the Research Triangle in the rolling hills of northern Granville County. For recreation, Oxford is located just twenty minutes from Kerr Lake, which has 800 miles of beautiful, forested shoreline and offers swimming, boating, fishing, sailing, water-skiing, picnicking and hiking. Kerr Lake is also a great place for family camping with hundreds of tent and trailer sites, most with a fire pit or grill, picnic table and tent pad. Playgrounds, showers, restrooms and telephones are located in the campgrounds nearby. Falls Lake is another very nice recreational spot, just twenty minutes south of Oxford. You will find convenient shopping, a variety of restaurants and budget-friendly hotels and motels in Oxford, and it’s just 15-20 minutes away from Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. Near enough for all the city conveniences, yet far enough away to enjoy a simple, small-town charm.

The North Central region of the state has a moderate climate; four seasons without the extremes seen in other parts of the country. Latitude accounts for some climatic variations, as do soils, plant cover and inland bodies of water. The central region, in winter, is protected by the western mountain ranges, so temps are usually 10-20 degrees warmer than in the mountains. In summer, when the air is dry enough to keep cloudiness at a minimum for several days, temperatures may reach 100 in the interior at elevations below 1,500 feet. Usually, however, clouds limit the sun's heating capacity and an entire summer sometimes passes without a high of even 90 degrees. North Carolina is outside the usual tornado path in the United States, but tropical hurricanes do come close enough to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
