Chapel Hill is a lovely, historic town located in Orange County in north central North Carolina. Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Durham form what is known as the Research Triangle on the Piedmont Plateau. Home to the University of North Carolina, which is the country’s oldest public university, Chapel Hill is the largest city in Orange County, with a population of 52,473. Orange County boasts having “the best of small town living in a unique cosmopolitan environment.” One of the main attractions in Chapel Hill is the Downtown, University Square and The Courtyard, a vibrant area of downtown that is usually filled with people, day and night. This area features a multitude of unique shops and boutiques, college-type eateries and restaurants, bars, nightclubs and taverns. The Chapel Hill Downtown Commission says “It’s where the town comes to life,” and in 1997, Sports Illustrated called Chapel Hill, “the best college town in America.” Also be sure to visit neighboring Hillsborough for antique and craft shops, art galleries and more than 100 18th and 19th century historic buildings. Other attractions in the Chapel Hill area includes historic homes and cemeteries, the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, and many beautiful gardens, including the North Carolina Botanical Garden, which is the largest natural botanical garden in the southeast. Chapel Hill also has several city parks with nature trails, picnicking areas, playgrounds, tennis courts, pools, athletic fields and more. The Chapel Hill Greenways contain eleven hiking and biking trails in a 40-mile system, and nearby Carrboro has one of the most extensive biking systems in the state.

Chapel Hill Weather & Climate

The Piedmont Plateau in central North Carolina is protected by the mountain ranges from the cold air that moves southeastward across the central States, so the seasons are generally mild. Expect temperatures to be 10-20 degrees warmer here than in the mountain regions. There is no pronounced wet or dry season in North Carolina, and rainfall varies throughout the year. Summer precipitation is normally the greatest with showers and thunderstorms. Autumn is the driest season. Average humidity does not vary greatly from season to season, and the lowest relative humidity is found over the southern Piedmont region. Over the mountains and the western Piedmont, frozen precipitation sometimes occurs in winter in connection with low-pressure storms. Average winter snowfall is about 10 inches in the northern Piedmont.
