Tryon bills itself as "The Friendliest Town in the South." It's located in Polk County southeast of Asheville along U.S. Highway 176 near the North Pacolet River. This is the central Blue Ridge Mountains and Foothills area, known for its' mild climate due to the "thermal belt," where it's cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. This allows for year round outdoor activities and recreation. Tryon has become a premier retirement town and has been listed as "one of the top ten retirement communities" by Money Magazine. It's also been known for its' equestrian pursuits for over fifty years. The Tryon Riding and Hunt Club and FENCE (Foothills Equestrian Nature Center,) host several events each year from March through early December, including the annual Block House Steeplechase Races, usually held in April. Lake Adger, located near Tryon, is a 438-acre lake with over 14 miles of unspoiled shoreline. The Lake Adger Trails Equestrian and Nature path meanders peacefully around the lake and a series of small, private communities are situated around the natural landscape of the lake. Several streams in and around Polk County near the town of Tryon offer fishing for brook, brown and rainbow trout, and other activities include rafting and tubing, hiking, camping and golf. Other places of interest include the city of Columbus, which is the county seat and historic Saluda, home to the steepest standard gauge railroad in the country. The downtown district of Saluda is on the National Register of Historic Places.
