Swansboro
is located on the banks of the White Oak River near the Bogue Sound and the towns of Atlantic Beach and Topsail Island. It's a quaint village with a slow, easy atmosphere and unique waterfront shops, boutiques, lots of antique stores and restaurants. The first settlement here began around 1730 on the former site of an Algonquin Indian village. In 1783, it became a colonial port town that thrived when shipbuilding became the major industry. Swansboro has continued to grow through the years, yet at the same time has retained the charm of the original colonial town. As part of North Carolina's beautiful Crystal Coast, outdoor sports abound in the Swansboro area. Choose from fishing and boating, sailing, surfing, windsurfing, water skiing, crabbing or clamming. The area is also known for its' championship golf courses, and the nearby Croatan National Forest offers hiking, canoeing and kayaking and excellent birdwatching opportunities. Other attractions near Swansboro includes the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, Fort Macon State Park, Atlantic Beach's famous beachside amusement park and Hammocks Beach State Park on Bear Island where you can watch for Loggerhead Turtles. Latitude accounts for some climatic variations in the state of North Carolina, as do soils, plant cover and inland bodies of water. The Gulf Stream has some direct effect on temperatures, as well, especially on the immediate coast. Coastal fronts are common during the winter months, and can push inland, bringing warmer than expected temperatures to the coastal areas. However, at times the cold Labrador Current passes between the Gulf Stream and the North Carolina coast, offsetting most of the general warming effect the Gulf Stream might otherwise have on coastal temperatures. The meeting of the two opposing currents sometimes provides a breeding ground for rough weather. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are lower than those even a few miles inland. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to North Carolina to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
