Pinnacle Mountain is located between Winston-Salem and Mount Airy near Pilot Mountain and Pilot Mountain State Park. It’s home to the Horne Creek Living Historical Farm, which is located on the site of two former family farms, and is a working museum dedicated to the study, preservation and interpretation of North Carolina’s rural heritage. Educational programs and special events such as corn shuckings and an old-fashioned ice cream social are held at the farm throughout the year. Rock climbing and rappelling are popular activities at Pinnacle Mountain, and nearby Pilot Mountain offers fishing, hiking, camping and picnicking. Pinnacle Mountain is also near Hanging Rock State Park, which contains rugged mountain terrain and sheer cliffs that tower over sparkling mountain streams and waterfalls. More than 300 species of plants can be found along the miles of hiking trails in this state park, and an observation tower atop Moore’s Knob offers gorgeous panoramic views of the Piedmont Plateau region. Rock climbing is also available at Hanging Rock State Park in designated areas and other activities include canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, swimming, picnicking and camping. Other attractions near Pinnacle Mountain include the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mayberry (home of The Andy Griffith Show,) Old Salem, the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History and the Shelton Vineyards.

Pinnacle Mountain Weather & Climate

The Blue Ridge Mountains range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the cities below. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations, with temperatures rarely reaching 90 degrees. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur at the mountain peaks. It%u2019s not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations, although ski resorts rely on snowmaking equipment to ensure a good base. Fall often has warm days and cool nights and is the driest period.
