Marble is one of the many small, peaceful mountain communities located in Cherokee County within the Nantahala National Forest in western North Carolina. It sits along State Route 19, between the towns of Andrews and Murphy, in an elongated valley of prime farmland. This valley is bordered by two mountain ranges that merge at the north end of the valley and form what is called the Nantahala River Gorge. Many unique attractions can be found in Cherokee County, near the town of Marble. Nearby Brasstown is a well-known arts and crafts community, home to the John C. Campbell Folk School. The community of Murphy is the county seat and began as an Indian trading post. It is both the first and last town in North Carolina (depending on which way you're traveling,) and it got its' name from the white, blue, gray and pink marble that was once quarried in the area. Other points of interest include the Cherokee County Historical Museum, historic Fort Butler, the Great Smoky Mountains Railway and the Trail of Tears - Tatham Gap. Also, the neighboring town of Andrews hosts the Annual WNC Wagon Trail during their Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration, as well as an Annual Fall Car Show. Outdoor recreation abounds near the town of Marble. Nearby Hiwassee Lake provides swimming, fishing, boating, water skiing, and camping and hiking along the shoreline. The Hiwassee River is a designated Trophy Trout Stream and also offers Class I and Class II white water rafting. The Nantahala and Ocoee Rivers are also good for rafting and kayaking. Marble is also just a short drive to the slopes for wintertime skiing and snowboarding.

Marble Weather & Climate

The Mountains, due to their mild summer temperatures, have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Midsummer afternoon temperatures average only around 80 degrees at elevations of 3,000 feet or higher. Nights are crisp and cool, but seldom too cold for outdoor activities or camping. In winter, snowfall is likely most years, but ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply. Large amounts of snow and extreme low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Rainfall is common in spring and summer. In spring, storm systems that bring cold weather southward reach North Carolina less often and less forcefully than in other parts of the country. Occasional invasions of cool dry air from the north continue during the summer, but are of short duration. Fall has warm days and cool nights and is the driest period.
