Burnsville is the county seat of Yancey County, which sits midway between Boone and Asheville in the western North Carolina mountains. At an elevation of over 2,800 feet, Burnsville offers panoramic views of the mountains, including Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi. The village of Burnsville centers on a town square that offers a variety of unique shops, art galleries, restaurants, library and courthouse. An old inn sits on the square and has been entertaining guests since 1833, among them Thomas Wolfe and Elvis Presley. The square is also the site of many activities throughout the year, including craft fairs, summer evening concerts and a lively 4th of July celebration. The surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, forests, rivers and streams provide ample opportunities for fishing, canoeing, hiking, tubing, horseback riding, camping and skiing. The natural beauty of the area has attracted scores of artisans and crafters to the Burnsville area, where there are more artists per capita than in any other region in the U.S. The Toe River Arts Council sponsors open studio tours during the first weekends of May and December, and the annual Mt. Mitchell Craft Fair is held in Burnsville the first weekend of August. Burnsville is a delightful mix of the old and new, and if you take time to explore the back roads, you’ll discover places with colorful names such as Hardscrabble, Possum Trot and Bee Log. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to stay a while, where you can do as much as you want, or as little as you want – and always have a good time. Burnsville is approximately 20 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and 35 miles northeast of Asheville.
