Badin Lake is situated in the heart of the Uwharrie National Forest near the community of New London in North Carolina’s Heartland region, approximately 50 minutes from Charlotte. The lake has 115 miles of shoreline, two-thirds of which are undeveloped, and it’s also the site of a private golf course. Activities on the lake include swimming, boating, fishing, jet skiing, sailing and water skiing. One boat ramp, with free access, is located on the lake, and there is also a day use area for picnicking. A 37-site campground borders Badin Lake, suitable for tents or trailers. The Uwharrie National Forest was proclaimed a national forest in 1961, making it one of the most recently formed in the National Forest System. At just 50,189 acres, the Uwharrie Forest is small, but provides a wide variety of natural resources, including pristine rivers and streams, diverse vegetation and wildlife. Rich in history, gold was found in the Uwharrie Mountains in the early 1800s, with another boom during the Great Depression. Some of the old mine shafts still remain and some people still pan for gold in the area streams. Other attractions near Badin Lake include the North Carolina Zoological Park, Town Creek Indian Mound, Reeds Gold Mine, the Charlotte Motor Speedway and pottery shopping in the nearby Seagrove area.

Central North Carolina, or The Heartland, is partially protected by the mountain ranges from the cold air that moves southeastward across the central States. During an average winter, temperatures in central North Carolina range about 10 degrees warmer than the coast, and 10 %u2013 20 degrees warmer than the High Country. The rise in average temperature is greater in May than in any other month, and likewise, the drop in temperature is greater in October than in any other month. There is no pronounced wet or dry season in North Carolina, and rainfall varies throughout the year. Summer precipitation is normally the greatest; showers and thunderstorms are common. Autumn is the driest season. Average humidity does not vary greatly from season to season, and the lowest relative humidity is found over the southern Piedmont region.
