Mountain-Island-Lake
is a picturesque lake located on the border of Gaston County and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Only 13 miles from downtown Charlotte, Mountain Island Lake is one of Northwest Charlotte's recreational playgrounds. In addition, this 3000-acre lake provides drinking water to the residents of Mecklenburg and Gaston Counties, as well as being an important wildlife area. Recreational activities on the lake include boating and fishing, water skiing, sailing, jet skiing and kayaking. Downtown Charlotte, with its' NASCAR racing, restaurants and shopping is just a short drive away. Lowe's Motor Speedway is approximately 18 miles from Mountain Island Lake. Other area attractions include the historic Rural Hill Farm and Historic Latta Plantation and the Carolina Raptor Center. The spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains are about two hours from Mountain Island Lake and the Atlantic Ocean is approximately a three and a half-hour drive away. Several major highways, including Interstates 77, 85 and 485 provide easy access to Mecklenburg County and Mountain Island Lake.

The Heartland, near the city of Charlotte, has a moderate, four-season climate. The single most important factor in the state that influences weather is altitude. The Heartland, or central part of the state, is partially protected by the western mountain ranges from the cold air that moves southeastward across the central States. Extreme cold temperatures are rare outside the mountains. The warmest days are found in the interior rather than near the coast. Autumn is the driest season and the season of most rapidly changing temperature. There is no distinct wet or dry season in the state, although July is usually the wettest month. North Carolina is outside the principal tornado area of the U.S., but still averages two or three per year, mostly east of the Mountains in the spring. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
