Lake Toxaway
is located southwest of Asheville in Transylvania County within the Nantahala National Forest. It has been a premier-family-resort destination since 1903 and today offers a wide variety of accommodations within several unique communities that surround the lake. Lake Toxaway is the state’s largest private lake, and has golf, tennis, fishing, boating, swimming, water skiing, horseback riding and hiking. Transylvania County is known as “land of the waterfalls,” and contains more than 470 miles of hiking trails and more than 250 waterfalls. Several trails lead to breathtaking falls, awesome mountain vistas and parts of the Appalachian Trail. The Whitewater Falls Scenic Area is where the Whitewater River drops more than 400 feet in a series of falls and cascades. Picnicking is available at the falls and one point offers fantastic views of the mountains and South Carolina Piedmont. Several public golf courses are in the immediate area, and winter ski resorts are just minutes away. Enjoy days of shopping at boutiques, arts and crafts shops and antique shops in nearby Brevard, Highlands and Cashiers. Lake Toxaway is also an easy drive to the city of Asheville and the Biltmore Estates. Anytime of the year is beautiful at Lake Toxaway, but fall is especially breathtaking when the mountains are painted with shades of gold, purple, crimson and yellow.

The Southwestern Mountains of North Carolina ranges from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet in elevation and the topography definitely affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the valleys below. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Snow may fall in March, but by May, things warm up with daytime highs in the 80s. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations, with frequent afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Winter is generally moderate, but more extreme conditions can occur at the mountain peaks. Large snow amounts and severe low temperatures are rare away from the highest peaks. Ski resorts usually rely on snowmaking equipment to ensure a good base. In general, the climate is not extreme, and supports year round activities.
