Lake Gaston
borders the counties of Warren, Halifax and Northampton in northeastern North Carolina, and the counties of Mecklenburg and Brunswick in Virginia. This high quality, man-made lake has over 20,000 acres of water, is 34 miles long and approximately 1 ˝ miles wide at the lower end of the lake. With over 350 miles of shoreline, it’s one of the most outstanding lakes in North Carolina for outdoor recreational fun. All types of water sports are available, including swimming, boating, water skiing, jet skiing, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Lake Gaston is well stocked with game fish such as striped bass, large mouth bass, crappie and several varieties of catfish. Marinas at Lake Gaston rent boats by the day or by the week. If you’re more of a land lover, Lake Gaston is a great place to simply relax with a good book or picnic beside the lake. There are several nearby golf courses and trails for hiking or biking. Lake Gaston is the site of several festivals and special events throughout the year, such as the annual Fish Fry in early May and the annual Spring Festival in late May. The Chamber of Commerce puts on a spectacular 4th of July parade and fireworks display, and the Lions Club sponsors an annual “all you can eat” Seafood Festival in October.

The North Central region of the state has a moderate climate; four seasons without the extremes seen in other parts of the country. Latitude accounts for some climatic variations, as do soils, plant cover and inland bodies of water. The central region, in winter, is protected by the western mountain ranges. In summer, when the air is dry enough to keep cloudiness at a minimum for several days, temperatures may reach 100 in the interior at elevations below 1,500 feet. Usually, however, clouds limit the sun%u2019s heating capacity and an entire summer sometimes passes without a high of even 90 degrees. North Carolina is outside the usual tornado path in the United States, but tropical hurricanes do come close enough to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
