Aquone
is located just southeast of the town of Topton within the Nantahala National Forest of western North Carolina. Amid the Great Smoky Mountains and the nearby Nantahala River and Lake Nantahala, visitors find one of the most popular and beautiful outdoor recreational playgrounds in the country. Activities on Lake Nantahala include boating, fishing, swimming and onshore camping. The Nantahala River, which is just south of the lake, is most well known for one thing - its' outstanding whitewater rafting. The mountains here contain some of the highest peaks in the Appalachian Range, and a network of bisecting streams flow down the steep slopes into the Aquone Reservoir. The clear, cold Nantahala River is then released from the bottom of the Aquone Reservoir, and offers Class II and III rafting through a beautiful, scenic river gorge. Rafting trips are eight miles long. Other activities in the Aquone area include canoeing and kayaking, rock climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking, gem mining and hiking. It's also just a short drive to Maggie Valley's skiing and snowboarding. Nearby attractions include the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, the town of Franklin's art galleries and antique shops, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Cherokee Indian Reservation casinos, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is approximately an hour away from Aquone.

The Mountains of North Carolina range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Snow may fall in March, but by May, things warm up with daytime highs in the 80s. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common in the summertime. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur in the mountains. It's not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations.
